MADISON — A bill to establish a wolf hunting and trapping season is necessary to control a “burgeoning” wolf population in order to protect livestock and pets, state Assembly Majority Leader Scott Suder told a legislative committee Wednesday.

WQOW-TV – Starting Friday, farmers can apply to take aim at Wisconsin wolves. For the past four decades, wolves have been on the endangered species list in the state. But wildlife officials recently decided to remove that protection because wolf numbers are up significantly. 

Wisconsin is home to nearly 800 wolves. But during the last week of November, the DNR says seven wolves were killed, including one in Dunn County.

ï» The U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service on Thursday announced it will take more public comments on the plan to remove endangered species protections for wolves across the Great Lakes region.

 MADISON – Wisconsin wildlife officials have communicated guarded support to the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service ( US FWS ) over recent federal efforts to remove the gray wolf from the endangered species list in the Great Lakes States.

 It’s an issue that crops up wherever humans and big predators — wolves, bears, lions — coexist.

 The U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service will host a public information meeting about its recent proposal to remove Endangered Species Act protection for the gray wolf in the western Great Lakes region, including Minnesota, Wisconsin and Michigan. Wolves killed 63 cattle, most of which were calves, worth a total of $113,586, according to a new report from the state Department of Natural Resources. Between 25 and 27 packs of wolves are believed to have carried out the killings along with a handful of lone wolves.

MADISON — Plans by the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service to remove the gray wolf from the endangered species list were praised Monday by Matt Frank, secretary of the state Department of Natural Resources.

The US Fish and Wildlife Service will try again to remove wolves from the Endangered Species List in Michigan, Minnesota and Wisconsin.
