Wolf severely injured by trapper’s snare

ROSSEAU – Caught in a snare, each attempt to escape pushed the dull wire further and further into the soft flesh of her leg.

“The snare had cut right through to the bone, so it was pretty severely injured,” Aspen Valley Wildlife Sanctuary managing director Howard Smith said, describing the condition of a female wolf currently in the sanctuary’s care. “She’s in shock so she’s pretty quiet.”

Local residents who were out walking their dog found the wolf, which Smith describes as an Algonquin, mid-day on Jan. 26 between Burk’s Falls and Kearney. The residents approached the animal and cut the wire snare before contacting the sanctuary…
