A sheepherder shot and killed a gray wolf in the Franklin Basin area last week after the wolf reportedly killed a lamb.

The 94-pound male wolf was killed July 6 on the Idaho side of Franklin Basin, east of Preston, according to Idaho Fish and Game regional conservation educator Jennifer Jackson. The sheepherder contacted U.S. Wildlife Services within 24 hours, and the animal was brought to the Fish and Game office in Pocatello on July 8, which Jackson said made the shooting legal under state law.

“You can legally kill a wolf that’s killing or molesting domestic livestock” as long as it is reported within 72 hours, Jackson said. She added that since the gray wolf was removed from the Endangered Species List, states are allowed to craft their own management plans. “This was absolutely in accordance with Idaho law.”
