The summary of the resolution is found below:

BE IT RESOLVED by the members of the Second Regular Session of the Sixtieth Idaho Legislature, the House of Representatives and the Senate concurring therein, that the above described conditions define an emergency condition for all rural Idahoans and, in the face of this emergency, the Legislature hereby encourages the Governor of the State of Idaho to declare that a state of emergency exists in Idaho and to authorize and require the Idaho Department of Fish and Game to use any legal means to reduce wolf numbers to those designated for recovery of the species.

You can read the entire resolution here: HOUSE CONCURRENT RESOLUTION NO. 43

With typos – “shoot on ‘site'” – and an insane assertion that wolves represent an emergency condition makes this resolution an embarrassment to the state of Idaho.

This level of ignorance from those involved in drafting this resolution, or worse the intentional fear mongering is unforgivable.

“wolf packs have moved into densely populated areas and unnecessarily large numbers of wolves constitute a threat, not only to property, but to human life itself, with particular threat to children;”

This is particularly aggregious in it’s attempt to invoke fear. At 0.3 wolf attacks per year in the entire North American continent over the last 100 years, it is pretty obvious there is no basis for this claim . It’s only purpose is to attempt to fear monger and lie. Because unfortunately, as many political strategists can tell you, a high percentage of the public will believe without doing any research.

“excessive numbers of wolves are hindering recovery of elk populations in parts of the state, are reducing the big game populations available to hunters in the state, and are preventing the Idaho Department of Fish and Game from exercising its mandate to manage big game for the benefit of hunters in the state;”

I could pick ANY of the paragraphs and point to a great body of evidence countering the claims they contain. This one, however, was particularly interesting to me since Elk have seen excellent recovery numbers over the last 25 years, which include 15 years of co-existing with wolves. As the story – Update: Utah anti-wolf bill continues to move forward – we published recently shows, a site which has no affection for wolves published numbers which  show clearly that elk populations are not impacted negatively by the presence of wolves. If Idaho is not seeing the growth that Montana and others are seeing, perhaps they should be looking at the reasons they are different and not for a reason that they are the same.

Deer are also seeing record high populations in recent years in states like Michigan where wolves are quite successfully returning.

This is a truly cynical attack against wolves which seem to serve the goals of Governor “Butch” Otter – who has stated his intentions quite clearly that he wants wolves at the minimum possible level required to keep them off the endangered species list.
