LANSING — Federal officials involved in managing the state’s wolves will discontinue their work next month because of federal budget cuts that eliminated funding for the program.
The U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service will host a public information meeting about its recent proposal to remove Endangered Species Act protection for the gray wolf in the western Great Lakes region, including Minnesota, Wisconsin and Michigan. State wildlife biologists suspect one of two young wolves in northern Lower Michigan has been illegally killed.
It is not unusual for wolves to kill “invading” dogs, and it’s a particularly well-known threat to dogs used for hunting, but Iron County, Michigan has now recorded their first such attack.
According to a story which appeared in the Detroit Free Press, wolf complaints from the western Upper Peninsula are down from 2009 – which could mean that deer numbers are up.
The article describes how wolf depredation of livestock has increased from 16 in 2009, to more than 60 in 2010. However, it doesn’t seek to explain the difference, instead calling for the delisting of wolves in the state so that they can just kill “rogue” wolves.
The US Fish and Wildlife Service will try again to remove wolves from the Endangered Species List in Michigan, Minnesota and Wisconsin.
A story which appeared on the Chicago Tribune site says that something long suspected has now been confirmed after a wolf pup has been spotted in Michigan’s Lower Peninsula.
The Michigan Department of Natural Resources and Environment has asked the U.S. FWS for the authority to use lethal measures to control what they deem to be “problem” wolves.
