 SITKA, Alaska (Greenpeace) — The Center for Biological Diversity and Greenpeace petitioned the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service today to give Endangered Species Act protection to the Alexander Archipelago wolf, a rare subspecies of gray wolf found only in the old-growth forests of Southeast Alaska.

 Alaska State Troopers cited three Southcentral residents this week for illegal possession of wolf hybrids. The charges came before and after authorities searched a Palmer-area business for evidence the owner is illegally raising and selling wolves or hybrid, wolf-dog mixes.

 PALMER, Alaska – Alaska Wildlife Troopers served a search warrant Thursday on Wolf Country USA, testing the DNA of dozens of suspected wolves or wolf hybrids.

 According to a story posted on the Alaska Public Radio Network web site, a citizen group has asked Alaska’s Department of Fish and Game not to kill a pack of wolves which call a popular local state park home.

A federal judge on Monday denied the state of Alaska’s request for a preliminary injunction to kill wolves.
