Minn. tribes: No wolf hunting on our lands

Two tribal councils have decided that they will not permit hunting on their land when the Minnesota hunt starts in November. The Bois Forte Band of Chippewa and Grand Portage Band of Lake Superior Chippewa have stated that their Reservations at Nett Lake, Lake Vermillion and Grand Portage will be closed to wolf hunting once the season starts November 3.

It is against federal law to hunt wolves on these reservations and tribal officials say they will aggressively seek prosecution of any one who violates the rule.

Clearly, the tribes are offended by the idea of sport hunting. Hunting, as part of the native American tradition is for subsistence and the idea of hunting for sport is in direct conflict with their culture.
