HOWLColorado’s networking initiative took another step forward after two highly reputable wolf organizations agreed to join the HOWLNetwork.

The Wolf Education and Research Center ( operates a facility near Lewiston, Idaho, which opened in 1997. It is home to the Owyhee pack. It is also the home of the Sawtooth pack which was the captive pack featured in top selling Discovery Channel documentaries Wolves at our door and Living with wolves. The pack was turned over to WERC by Jim Dutcher, the film maker. They also operate business offices in Oregon. The focus for WERC is the education of the public about wolves, which makes them an ideal partner.

The Big Oak Wolf Sanctuary ( based in Green Cove Springs, Florida, is home to 48 wolves and wolf-hybrids. John Knight classifies the facility as a true sanctuary which does not publically exhibit their rescued animals – preferring to offer them a stress-free way to live out the rest of their lives in small packs.

We look forward to working with both these new partners over the coming years in our unified goal of educating America about wolves, their impact on the ecosystem and how humans and wolves can learn to co-exist.
