The Southwest Environmental Center held contests for students – the winners will be announced Saturday, November 21.

The contests were Mexican gray wolf-based art and essay challenges for middle school students. Over 400 New Mexico students entered the various contests. The waiting is almost over, and Governor Bill Richardson will be there to help celebrate the winners.

The announcements will happen at the Rio Grande Theater in downtown Las Cruces, with a reception at the Southwest Environmental Center.

The prizes will include an iPod Touch, a signed Robert Bateman print, signed copies of Barry Lopez’ “Of Wolf and Men,” and… in my opinion the coolest prize… a wolf country trip.

The Southwest Environmental Center will also feature a short film about wolves. And it may be wise to have ear plugs as there is also plans for a howling contest.

If you happen to be  in the area, the event is free, and open to the public and starts at 1 pm.

For more information, go to the Southwest Environmental Center website.
